🚂 $7.5M rail grant puts a national Rail Resilience Center at Virginia Tech

The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded Virginia Tech $7,509,783 to establish a national Rail Resilience Center, Rep. Morgan Griffith announced Monday. The center focuses on safety and resiliency along the Strategic Rail Corridor Network (STRACNET), the lines the military relies on to move equipment — a corridor that runs through the 9th District, the same corridor eyed for the proposed passenger rail extension from Christiansburg to Bristol.

The funding supports two research facilities and a monitoring tool for track-maintenance health, and builds railroad engineering capacity for both military and civilian lines. Virginia Tech adds a 21% match. The award is part of the FRA's fiscal 2026 CRISI round: $2.3 billion across 105 projects in 45 states. Griffith

🦌 Elk-warning tech on Route 460 caught 97% of animals — and drivers slowed down

A 750-pound elk stepping onto a dark mountain highway is exactly what the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute spent a year guarding against on Route 460 in Southwest Virginia. The one-year pilot put thermal cameras and AI software on eight portable, solar-powered trailers along a 14-mile stretch of the Corridor Q expansion; when the system spotted a large animal, roadside signs lit up: "Wildlife Detected Ahead. Slow Down."

Across more than 10,000 passing vehicles, the system identified medium- and large-sized wildlife with 97% accuracy, and drivers approaching activated signs slowed by about 3 mph on average. It matters out there: elk collisions average more than $80,000 per crash, and the corridor is home to roughly 100 elk — a herd that's also become a Buchanan County tourism draw. The VDOT-sponsored pilot ended in September, and VTTI says the portable setup could transfer to other animal-crossing hotspots. The project also took first place in the 2026 T-Mobile Innovate Awards' Innovation in Community category. VT News
