Move-In Week Is Here: A Local's Survival Guide
It's that time of year. Virginia Tech's Fall 2026 Move-In starts today and runs through Sunday, bringing thousands of students and their families into Blacksburg. Here's what you need to know to navigate the week.
The schedule:
Aug. 18–20 (Tue–Thu): First-year and transfer students move in — this is the busiest stretch. Students arrive in staggered time-slots, but expect heavy traffic all three days, especially mornings.
Aug. 21–23 (Fri–Sun): Returning students arrive. Volume stays high but spreads across more of campus.
Aug. 22–23 (Sat–Sun): Returning cadets move in.
Road changes: Washington Street becomes one-way only (from Beamer Way toward Kent Street), 6 AM–6 PM daily from Aug. 18–21. If your usual commute runs through that corridor, plan an alternate route.
Parking: Multiple campus lots will be closed to the public and reserved as 60-minute move-in zones from Tuesday through Thursday. The North End Garage is also restricted — only retail and Carilion customers can enter (via Gilbert Street). Faculty and staff are encouraged to park in less congested lots away from residence halls.
Transit: Blacksburg Transit shifts to Intermediate Service starting Aug. 17, with Full Service resuming Aug. 22. During move-in week, the CAS (Campus Shuttle) and HXP (Hokie Express) routes will run on detours around closed campus roads. Check ridebt.org for updated maps.
Practical tips for residents:
Avoid campus-adjacent roads during mornings (8–11 AM), when most move-in time-slots begin. South Main Street, Prices Fork Road near campus, and Tom's Creek Road will see the most congestion.
Downtown Blacksburg will be busier than usual — families exploring restaurants and shops between unpacking runs. Great for local businesses, but plan extra time if you're heading downtown for errands.
Grocery stores (Kroger on South Main, Food Lion) see a major spike this week. If you can shop early morning or late evening, you'll avoid the lines.
Be patient and welcoming. Many of these families are visiting Blacksburg for the first time. A friendly wave or helpful direction goes a long way toward making our town's first impression a good one.
Classes officially begin Monday, August 24. Just remember this also means that football season is right around the corner!

Planning Commission Retreat — Overview of the Agenda
Later this evening, the Planning Commission holds its 2026 annual retreat at 5:00 PM in the Blacksburg Motor Company building (400 South Main Street). It starts with a potluck supper at 5:00, with the working session running from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. (Note: I’m not sure what the expectations are for the potluck portion. Problably worth checking with the Planning and Building Department at 540-443-1300 if you are planning to attend early)
This year's retreat agenda tackles some of the bigger policy questions shaping Blacksburg's future:
Cannabis and Vape Shop Regulations — The commission will discuss how to handle cannabis businesses and vape shops in town. As Virginia's cannabis market continues to evolve, local governments are working through what regulations and zoning controls make sense at the municipal level.
ReCode Blacksburg — An ongoing effort to modernize and simplify the town's zoning ordinance. ReCode is a comprehensive rewrite aimed at making the code more user-friendly, internally consistent, and aligned with the Comprehensive Plan. It's one of the most significant regulatory undertakings the town has initiated in years.
Comprehensive Plan Update — Commissioners will review progress on implementing the Comprehensive Plan — the long-range vision document that guides land use, transportation, housing, and development decisions across town.
Planning Commission Goals — The retreat wraps with a goal-setting discussion for the commission's priorities heading into the rest of 2026 and beyond.

Market Square Jam: Spruce Run the Jewels
The Market Square Jam runs every Wednesday evening from June through September, 7:00–9:00 PM. The series brings together musicians and community members for an evening of traditional old-time music in the heart of downtown Blacksburg. Bring a chair, bring the family, and soak in some of the best picking this side of the Blue Ridge.
Spruce Run the Jewels is an old-time string band fronted by fiddler Steve Kruger of the Little Stony Nighthawks, featuring a rotating lineup of musicians playing high-tempo local dance tunes and songs rooted in the traditions of Southwest Virginia and North Carolina. Members have included Rory Mullenex, Trevor McKenzie, Doug Sharkey, Liam Kelley, and Aaron Ratcliffe.

Hokies Women's Soccer Hosts Liberty Under the Lights
The Virginia Tech Women's Soccer team continues its season-opening homestand when they host Liberty at Thompson Field on Thursday, August 20 at 7:00 PM.
The Hokies opened 2026 with four straight home matches — they've already faced Old Dominion (Aug. 13) and VMI (Aug. 16), and after Thursday's matchup with Liberty, they'll wrap up the opening stretch against Maryland on August 23. It's a deliberate front-loaded schedule designed to build chemistry and momentum before ACC play begins.
Liberty enters as a notable opponent. The Flames are defending CUSA champions and their 2026 schedule includes three Power Four programs. Thursday's match in Blacksburg is one of their toughest early-season tests — and the Hokies will want to make a statement on their home pitch.
Thompson Field's intimate setting makes for a great atmosphere at night games. Admission details are available on HokieSports.com.
