🥤 New Around Town: Rise and Renew Juice Co.

🥤 New Around Town: Rise and Renew Juice Co.

We're starting something. Every so often we'll introduce you to a business that's just getting off the ground here. First up:

Rise and Renew started as a New Year's resolution. The founder makes a habit of trying to one-up the previous year's, and this year's was to start a small business. Here’s what the owner said about the origin:

"I've always loved making juices without additives or preservatives, first just for myself, then for friends. When I realized how much demand there was within my own circle, I decided to take the leap and see if I could turn it into something bigger, starting small at a local farmers market.

I got signed on with the Blacksburg Farmers Market, earned my ServSafe certification, and found a certified kitchen to work out of: Millstone Kitchen, located behind Moon Hollow Brewery. Since then, it's been a great success. We're nearly selling out every Saturday at the market.

We offer a wide range of flavors, from earthy to sweet, so there's something for everyone. One of our top sellers is the Solar Drift, a refreshing blend of mango, orange, and strawberry.”

Go find them Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Market Square Park. This week they are featuring apples from market neighbors at Ayers Orchard. Stop by and try their fresh pressed Apple Juice or the Green Revival. Go early — it's a home game weekend, and it will probably get crowded.

Run a business in Blacksburg, or know someone who does? Hit reply. We'd like to feature you.

🧘 Floyd Yoga Jam starts today, and the schedule is a little wild

Floyd Yoga Jam opens today at Burnette Farm in Willis and runs through Sunday — four days of yoga, live music and workshops over Labor Day weekend, about an hour south of town. It's put on by Karma Culture, Inc., a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3).

The yoga schedule is worth a look even if you're not going. Seven venues — four tents named Buddha Moon, Brahma, Nirvana and Ganesha, plus a tea house, a village space, and a guided hike track — running more than a hundred sessions across the weekend. Katherine Chantal opens it at noon today at Buddha Moon.

Some of what's on it:

  • 🐺 Werewolves & Vampire Yoga Simulation — Friday, 8:30 p.m., Jason Clemons and Dr. Yay Keong Tan. No further explanation is offered.

  • 💀 Grateful Dead Yoga — Saturday, 9:30 p.m., Gina Hart-Smith, who is also doing sit-down comedy Friday evening under the title "Calmer Than You Are."

  • 🌿 An Herbal Approach to Lyme Disease — Friday, 3:00 p.m., Ed and Maya Skopal, who also run a weeds walk, a wild edible plant ID session, and a talk on adaptogens. The most practically useful thread in the program if you spend time outdoors around here.

  • 🐦 Ornitherapy walks with Salty Bird Wellness — golden hour Saturday evening, sunrise Sunday morning.

  • 🧠 The Neuroscience Behind Yoga & Meditation — Saturday, 1:30 p.m., Mala Cunningham and Sita Aldrete. Dr. Sundar Balasubramanian teaches two sessions on the science of pranayama.

  • 🕉️ For the traditionalists — Jeff Tiebout leads the classic Ashtanga primary series Friday morning, and there's group-led Mysore at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A few things run every day: Recovery Dharma at 6 p.m., a four-part Red Tent Gathering at 4 p.m., and music on three stages.

If you're going late: tickets come as four-day (Thursday through Sunday), three-day (Friday through Sunday), two-day (Saturday and Sunday), and single-day passes. Multi-day tickets include primitive camping and showers. Car camping, RV parking and glamping are separate add-ons, and once you park onsite you can't exit and re-enter.

🌿 Blacksburg's congressman wants to better regulate hemp

Rep. Morgan Griffith represents the Ninth District, which covers Blacksburg, and he has a bill that would decide what happens to every hemp gummy, seltzer and CBD product sold in this country.

It's called the Hemp Enforcement, Modernization, and Protection Act, H.R. 7212, and Griffith introduced it in January with Rep. Marc Veasey, a Texas Democrat. The bill would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to build a framework for regulating cannabinoid hemp products inside the FDA.

Why this week matters. On Tuesday the House voted 370-48 to pass a stopgap funding bill moving most of that deadline from Nov. 12 to Dec. 11. Griffith put out a statement using the delay to encourage passage his HEMP Act.

Meanwhile, here in Virginia a provision in Virginia's budget bill already took effect Aug. 15 capping hemp products at two milligrams of total THC per package, and eliminating the workaround that had let stronger products stay on shelves if they carried at least 25 times as much CBD as THC.
