🌾 Virginia Tech plans a large-scale composting facility

With support from a $3.5 million state award, Virginia Tech is planning an industrial-scale composting facility that could process up to 2,700 tons of food and agricultural waste each year, while supporting research and student learning. The project, described in the university's "Building toward a zero-waste campus" writeup, is part of Tech's push toward a zero-waste campus. Details

🚒 A fire truck is up for auction in Christiansburg, and bidding closes tomorrow

Ever wanted your own fire truck? A 2000 Pierce Quantum pumper engine is up for bid in a government surplus auction out of Christiansburg on GovDeals, and the auction closes Wednesday, Sept. 30. The truck runs a 470-horsepower Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine with roughly 43,300 miles on it, and it carries a 2,000 GPM Waterous top-mount pump that passed its 2025 pump test, a 750-gallon tank, a deck gun, and an onboard foam system. It's sold as-is, and bidding was only $85,000 as of Monday evening. If this has always been a dream of yours, tomorrow is your deadline.

  • HHS grants land in Blacksburg. Rep. Morgan Griffith's office announced three federal health grants for Blacksburg organizations this week: Biotherapeutics, Inc. received $500,000 for Alzheimer's disease research and $191,331 for psoriasis therapies, while the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) received $592,397 for research into back pain injury mechanisms and chronic pain behaviors.
